Beware “Tabnapping” – a new kind of Phishing scam
“Tabnapping” relies on the user believing that it is impossible for the content of a tab to change while you’re not looking. You may click on a link in Twitter, Facebook or a “sponsored link” in Google which will load a genuine webpage that delivers the content it promises. If you then click away from that site, leaving it open in a “tab” whilst viewing another website, the content of the original tab will change to a fake log-in page impersonating one of the websites you visit most often, be that Facebook, Gmail, Hotmail or your online banking account. You then scan back through your tabs and believe you’ve left the site open and have been logged out, so you log back in again.

Twitter Attack

There's another malware run underway on Twitter.

A fairly large pool of fake accounts are sending out messages with popular hashtags and the text "haha this is the funniest video ive ever seen".

pc-tv.tv

People see these messages when they look for trending topics in Twitter.

The shortlinks in the Tweets point to a page under pc-tv.tv, which uses a Java exploit to drop a keylogger / banking trojan combo to your system.

The attack is unusually easy to follow by just looking at the source code of the page. Take a look at this:

pc-tv.tv

F-Secure Anti-virus blocks access to the malicious pages and detects both the malicious Jar file and the trojan it drops. We have also reported the shortlink to bit.ly and they should disable it soon.

Lesson of the day is probably this: Do you really need Java in your browser? Seriously, do you? If not, get rid of it.

Windows 7 Tweaks

Turn off Hibernation
Unless you are worried about your laptop battery going out while you are working on an important document and losing the data, Hibernation is a waste of disk space. It builds large files that slow down backup and cloning. To disable hibernation: Click "Start" and type "powercfg -h off" (without quotes) and when you press enter a screen with come up and disappear. Most software that saves data, like text editors, have features to save your work every few minutes.

Turn off Windows Defender - wants too run often.

Click "Start" and type and enter "def" and select "Windows Defender" click "Tools" "Options" and uncheck the box "Automatically Scan" It's easy to create a desktop shortcut and run it when you want it to run. Create a desktop shortcut to "\program files\windows defender\MSASCui.exe" and run it from time to time. It searches for malware and spyware, much like AdAware.

Turn off automatic Defragmenter

Defragging every week or two is often enough, so run it manually when you are going to take a break. Click "Start" type "di" and select "Disk Defragmenter"and "Configure scheduler" and uncheck the "Run on schedule" box. If you are doing a demanding task like graphics editing or CAD recalculations and defrag kicks in, you'll just have to go to lunch.

Change Windows power plan to High Performance :

1. Open the Start Menu, and type powercfg.cpl in the search box and press enter.
A) Go to step 3.
OR

A) Click on the Power Options icon.
3. To see alll of your available power plans, you will need to click on the drop down arrow to the right of Show additional plans. (See screenshots below)
